Build a better Salad
I have a theory about why people hate salad. It’s because most people are just doing it all wrong! Overdressed, under seasoned, boring ingredients! Here are my top 3 tips on how to build a better salad.
1.) Use a Variety of Greens! Changing up the greens in your salad keeps things exciting, flavorful and healthy! Love romaine lettuce? Try adding some spinach, arugula or swiss chard to it the next time you make a salad. It will add more depth and flavor, and it’s a great way to work in another green veggie without it stealing the show! I also like to include herbs in this step Adding herbs to your salad is a GAME CHANGER! It is a flavor booster and really elevates the rest of the salad. It keeps things tasting super fresh and herbs have a lot of healthy benefits like Vitamin C, Vitamin K and antioxidants!
2.) Add Texture and Crunch! Having a variety of textures will keep things interesting and delicious! I also like to include anything Onion-y in this step. Veggies in the onion family are full of antioxidants and they are anti-inflammatory. Adding crunchy fruits, veggies or nuts to your salad are going to ensure that you have a nice bite and most likely more protein and fiber. This means that your salad will be more filling and satisfying! Texture not only applies to crunch, but creaminess too. Think avocados for some good healthy fat. Remember, you need fat from avocados and olives (think about using their oils for the dressing!), to help your body absorb all the nutrients from the other foods you’re eating.
3.) SEASON your salad! YES. Put salt and pepper on your salad greens before dressing them. This is one thing I learned from working alongside chefs in my early 20’s! When cooking, seasoning at every layer is the key to properly seasoned food. If you season your salad, you’re going to get more flavor which means it’s going to be THAT much more delicious ;)
So there you go! Those are my top 3 tips for Building a Better Salad. Let me know if you try these tips and what combinations you came up with! It’s a great way to experiment and try to new flavors.
